Step 1: editor’s assessment

    Prior to the peer review process, the editors check the manuscript to ensure that it complies with the guidelines for authors (whether the paper conforms to the basic requirements of the journal, such as word count, clarity of language and format).

    The quality of the article was not assessed.

  • 3

    If a paper does not conform to the guidelines of the journal, it will be sent back to the author for revision.

  • 4

    If the article does not correspond to the aim and scope of the journal or if, after the second submission, it does not correspond to the guidelines, it will be rejected, and the author will be informed about this.

  • 5

    Only articles that correspond to the journal guidelines will be submitted for peer review.

Step 2: first peer review

    The text submitted for publication will be reviewed by two reviewers. The reviewers are independent experts in the field. The reviewers check the validity, significance, and originality of the article.

    In the peer review process, the reviewers examine whether:

    1. the article corresponds to the profile of the journal;
    2. the topic of the article is of interest;
    3. author adds originality to the topic;
    4. the writing style is scientific;
    5. the arguments have a clear and logical structure;
    6. the study design, and methodology are appropriate;
    7. conclusions are reliable, meaningful and supported by research.

    The reviewers send their reports to the editor and inform him of their decision.

    The editor will consider all evaluations before making an overall decision. If the evaluations differ significantly, the editor may invite an additional reviewer to provide another opinion before making a decision.

    After evaluation, the editor may decide one of the following:

    • Publication of the article and informing the author in advance via email (ACCEPTED); 
    • The article will be returned to the author for correction of any editing problems (ACCEPTED WITH MINOR/MAJOR REVISIONS), in which case the evaluation reports will be shared with the author with any further guidance from the editor.
    • Rejection of the article if it does not successfully fulfill the above criteria (REJECTED).

Step 3: revision and resubmission

    In case of “Accepted with revisions” (minor or major), the reviewer’s report will be sent to the author with any further guidance from the editor.

    The authors will adjust their article based on the reviewers’ comments and will resubmit the revised article, meeting the deadline.

  • 3

    After resubmission, the manuscript will be checked by the editor assisted by the reviewers.

  • 4

    The manuscript will be submitted for the second round of peer review. The reviewers will assess how the authors have responded to their comments.

  • 5

    The paper may be rejected if the editor considers that the changes made are not appropriate.

AUTHOR GUIDELINES 

  • Thank you for choosing us to send us your paper. These steps will help you complete all the requirements for your paper to be published in Etnosfera. 
  • Please follow the instructions, as non-corresponding materials will be automatically rejected
  • GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Please ensure that you submit your manuscript before the submission deadline for the issue in which you wish to publish (see the “Call for papers” section of the website). The articles submitted after the submission deadline are not processed by the editorial board.
  2. The Etnosfera Journal currently publishes only materials in English in print and electronic issue. However, we are also publishing a Romanian version on the journal’s website, so we invite authors who would like to publish a Romanian version of the material to send it to us.
  3. Manuscripts should be submitted to us at office@etnosfera.ro
  4. There are no fees for publication in this journal.
  5. After submission of the manuscript, the authors will be notified of the overall eligibility of their work. 
  6. Paper quality is not being evaluated at this time.
  7. If an article does not meet the journal guidelines, it will be resubmitted to the author for revision. If, after a second submission, the article does not meet the guidelines, it will be rejected, and the author will be informed.
  • FORMAT OF THE PAPERS 
  1. The text will be edited in a Microsoft Word document.
  1. The material must be written in English.
  2. The material must have between 3.500 and 5.000 words, including tables, references, and footnotes (between 5-15 pages). Articles less than 3.500 or over 5.000 words will not be published.
  3. Article title: title 1, Times New Roman, 14 centered, uppercase, bold.
  4. Author name and surname: immediately after the article title, Times New Roman, 11, right aligned, italicized (with footnote: institutional affiliation, email address).
  5. Abstract: the material will have an abstract of 150-250 words, Times New Roman, 10, left-right aligned, 1 spacing, italicized + 3-5 keywords.
  6. The material must be organized into chapters and subchapters, which will be numbered. Titles will be written in Times New Roman, capitalized, and aligned in the center.
  7. Material text (which can be article or review): Times New Roman, 11, left-right aligned, 1.15 spacing.
  • CITATION AND BIBLIOGRAPHY  
  1. Citation:
  1. Citation should be in footnotes only and not in the text. Footnotes should be in Times New Roman format, 10, left-right aligned, and 1 spacing.
  2. Quotes must be enclosed in quotation marks, Times New Roman, 10, left-right aligned, and 1 spacing. Important: in the footnote, the citation in the original language (except in the case of books/articles in English) should be given first, followed by the source. Each citation should be accompanied by the source (including page, except for electronic materials).
  3. Examples of citations in footnotes:
  1. Book: author’s name and surname, Book title, City, Publishing House, Year, p. 1/pp. 1-2 (eg.: Alina Popescu, Introducere în sociologie [Introduction in sociology], Bucharest, Beladi Publishing House, 2002, p. 11). Note: if we have two authors, we use Mihai Popescu and Ion Ionescu, if we have three authors, we use Alin Vasile, Mihai Popescu and Ion Ionescu, and if we have more than three authors, we mention first all the names and then the surnames in the first citation, then we use name and then surname of the first author followed by “et al” (ex: Ion Popescu et al.). If we quote more than one work by the same author from the same year the letters a, b, c, etc., must be included after the year of publication.

  • Other important information: 
  1. Differences between footnotes and bibliography:
  1. In footnotes: we will first write the name and then the author’s surname, and the indication of the pages is mandatory (Alin Popescu…).
  2. In the bibliography: we will first write the author’s surname and then the author’s name (Popescu Alin…). Indications for pages are mandatory only for articles published in journals or chapters in books. 
  1. Titles:
  1. The titles of books, articles, etc., should be written in the original language and then translated into English and enclosed in square brackets.
  2. For books: the title is italicized (e.g.: Alin Popescu, Introduction to Sociology …).
  3. For chapters in books: the title of the chapter in quotation marks, and the title of the book in italics (e.g.: Alin Popescu, „Sociologie. Definiții și teorii” [“Sociology. Definitions and theories…] in Alin Popescu, Introducere în sociologie [Introduction in sociology] …).
  4. Articles (in journals or online): the title should be placed between quotation marks (e.g.: Mihai Popescu, „Sociologie. Definiții și teorii” [“Sociology. Definitions and theories] …).
  1. op. cit.: is used to quote a single work by an author; for the first time, and the reference is integral; after that, op. cit. + page/pages is used (e.g.: Alina Popescu, op. cit., p. 2); it is used in case other works by other authors have been inserted before the bibliographical reference.
  2. Ibidem: used when there are successive references to the same author and the same work: Ibidem, p. 9.
  3. In Romanian, the quotation marks are: „ …” (These will be used in footnotes when the citations are in Romanian). If quotation marks are present, we proceed as follows: „« … »”. In English, quotation marks are: “…”. If quotation marks are used, we proceed as follows: “this is our ‘house’ for today”.
  4. Apostrophe: ’
  • Bibliography:
  1. The complete list of references quoted in the text must be presented at the end of the paper in alphabetical order after the author’s surname (e.g.: Popescu Maria, Istoria sociologiei [History of sociology], Bucharest, Antet Publishing House, 2001).
  2. Materials without author’s surname and name will be marked with ***, title, etc. and will be placed last in the bibliography.
  3. The format of the bibliography will be Times New Roman, 11, left-right aligned, 1.15 spacing (e.g.: Popescu Maria, Istoria sociologiei [History of sociology], Bucharest, Antet Publishing House, 2001).

OPEN-ACCESS POLICY  

  • The Etnosfera journal provides open access to its content based on the premise that making research results freely available to the public stimulates the exchange of knowledge, both nationally and internationally. Scientific articles published over the years in The Etnosfera journal can be consulted in the “Archive” section.

  • Users are permitted to read, download, copy, disseminate, reproduce, print or search in the full texts of articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without prior permission from the publisher or author, as long as they cite the source.

PUBLICATION ETHICS

The Etnosfera journal, which is published with the financial support of the Romanian Academy Publishing House, fully respects and applies, through its practices, the basic principles of publication ethics defined by the International Committee on Publication Ethics (for more information, see: http://www.publicationethics.org/), principles common to national and international journals with high academic status. For this reason, we ask our contributors to respect the principles stated in their preparation and submission.

  • EDITORS
  1. Fair-play and editorial independence
  1. The editors evaluate submitted manuscripts exclusively on the basis of their academic merit (importance, originality, validity of scholarship, clarity) and their relevance to the journal’s field of endeavor, without regard to the race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, citizenship, religious belief, political philosophy, or institutional affiliation of the authors.
  2. Editorial and publication decisions are not determined by the policies of governments or any other agencies outside the journal.
  3. The editor-in-chief has full authority over all editorial content of the journal and the timing of its publication.
  1. Confidentiality
  1. Editors and editorial staff will not disclose any information relating to a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisers, and the publisher, as necessary.
  1. Disclosure and conflicts of interest  
  1. Editors and editorial board members will not use unpublished information disclosed in a submitted manuscript for their own research purposes without the authors’ explicit written consent. Privileged information or ideas obtained from the editors during the processing of the manuscript will be kept confidential and will not be used for personal purposes.
  2. Editors will refrain from reviewing manuscripts in which they have a conflict of interest arising from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships/connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions related to the work; instead, they will ask another member of the editorial board to handle the manuscript.
  1. Publication decisions  
  1. The editors ensure that all submitted manuscripts are peer reviewed by at least two experts in the field.
  2. The editor-in-chief is responsible for deciding which manuscripts will be submitted to the journal based on the validation of the manuscript, its importance to researchers and readers, reviewers’ comments, and the applicable legal requirements regarding defamation, copyright infringement, and plagiarism.
  3. In making this decision, the editor-in-chief may consult with other editors or reviewers.
  1.  Involvement and cooperation in investigations
  1. Editors will take action when ethical concerns are raised about a submitted manuscript or published work. Every reported act of unethical behavior will be investigated, even if discovered years after publication.
  2. Editors follow the COPE flowcharts (available at publicationethics.org/files/Full%20set%20of%20flowcharts.pdf) when dealing with suspected misconduct cases. If the ethical concern is well-founded, a correction, retraction, expression of concern, or another note, as appropriate, will be published in the journal.
  • REVIEWERS
  1. Contributing to editorial decisions
  1. Reviews support editors in editorial decision-making and through editorial communications with authors can help authors improve their manuscripts. 
  2. Peer review is an essential component of formal scholarly communication and is central to scientific research. 
  1. Promptness 
  1. Any invited reviewer who does not feel qualified to review the research submitted in a manuscript or who knows that prompt review will be impossible should immediately inform the editors and decline the invitation to review so that other reviewers can be contacted.
  1. Confidentiality
  1. All manuscripts received are confidential.
  2. Manuscripts should not be shown or discussed with others unless authorized by the editor-in-chief (who will do so only in exceptional and specific circumstances). 
  3. This also applies to invited reviewers who decline the invitation to review.
  1. Standards of objectivity
  1. The review must be carried out objectively, and the comments must be clearly described with supporting arguments so that the authors can use them to improve the manuscript. 
  2. The personal criticism of the authors is inappropriate.
  1. Citation of sources  
  1. Reviewers should identify relevant published works that have not been cited. Any statement that is an observation, derivation, or argument that has been reported in previous publications must be cited.
  2. Reviewers should also notify the editors of any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under review and any other manuscript (published or unpublished) of which they have personal knowledge.
  1. Disclosure and conflicts of interest
  1. Any invited reviewer who has conflicts of interest arising from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions related to the manuscript and the work described in the manuscript must immediately notify the editors to declare their conflicts of interest and decline the invitation to review so that other reviewers may be contacted.
  2. Unpublished data disclosed in a submitted manuscript should not be used in a reviewer’s own research without the authors’ express written consent. Privileged information or ideas gained from peer review must remain confidential and will not be used for personal benefit. This policy also applies to invited reviewers who decline the invitation to participate in the peer review.  
  • AUTHORS
  1. Reporting standards
  1. The authors of the original research must provide an accurate description of the work performed and the results, followed by an objective discussion of the significance of the work.
  2. The manuscript should contain sufficient details and references to help others to reproduce it.
  3. Both reviews and articles must be accurate, objective and comprehensive. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behavior and are unacceptable.
  1. Access to and retention of data
  1. Authors may be required to provide the primary data of their study with the manuscript for editorial review and should be prepared to make the data publicly available if possible.
  2. In any case, authors should ensure the accessibility of these data to other competent professionals for at least 10 years after publication.
  1. Originality and plagiarism 
  1. The authors must ensure that they have written and submitted only a completely original manuscript. If they have used the work and/or words of others, they must ensure that these have been properly cited. 
  2. Plagiarism takes many forms, from “passing off” the work of another as the author’s own work, to copying or paraphrasing substantial parts of another’s work (without attribution), to claiming the results of research carried out by others. 
  3. Plagiarism, in all its forms, constitutes unethical publication behavior and is unacceptable.
  1. Authorship of the manuscript
  1. Only individuals who meet these authorship criteria should be listed as authors in the manuscript because they must be able to publicly take responsibility for the content: 
  1. have made significant contributions to study conception, design, execution, data collection, or analysis/interpretation; 
  2. drafted the manuscript or critically reviewed; 
  3. have seen and approved the final version of the paper and have agreed to its submission for publication.
  1. All persons who have made substantial contributions to the work presented in the manuscript (such as technical help, drafting and editing assistance, general support), but who do not meet the criteria for authorship, should not be listed as authors but should be listed in the “Acknowledgments” section after obtaining their written permission to be listed. 
  2. The corresponding author must ensure that all co-authors are included in the list of authors and verify that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the manuscript and have agreed to its submission for publication.
  1. Multiple, duplicate, redundant, or simultaneous submission/publication
  1. Papers describing the same research should not be published in more than one journal or primary publication. Therefore, authors should not submit a manuscript that has already been published in another journal.
  2. Simultaneous submission of a manuscript to more than one journal is unethical and unacceptable publication behavior.
  1. Disclosure and conflicts of interest 
  1. The authors should – at the earliest possible stage – disclose any conflicts of interest that could be understood as influencing the results or their interpretation in the manuscript.  
  2. All sources of financial support for the work must be disclosed (including grant number or other reference number, if necessary). 
  1. Indication of sources  
  1. Authors should ensure that they have properly acknowledged the work of others. Information obtained privately (from conversations, correspondence or discussions with third parties) should not be used without explicit, written permission from the source.
  2. Authors must not use information obtained in the course of providing confidential services, such as refereeing manuscripts or grant applications, unless they have obtained explicit written permission from the author(s) of the work involved in these services.
  1. Peer review 
  1.  Authors are obliged to participate in the peer review process and to cooperate fully, responding promptly to editors’ requests for raw data, clarifications, and evidence of ethical approval, author consent, and copyright permission. 
  2.  In the case of an initial “revisions needed” decision, authors should respond systematically, point-by-point, and in a timely manner to reviewers’ comments, revising and resubmitting the manuscript to the journal by the deadline.   
  1. Fundamental errors in published works
  1. When authors discover significant errors or inaccuracies in their own published work, it is their obligation to promptly inform the editors or publisher of the journal and to cooperate with them either to correct the work in the form of an erratum or to retract the work. 
  2. If the editors or publishers find out from a third person that a published work contains a significant error or inaccuracy, they will contact the author immediately. Authors have the obligation to promptly correct or withdraw the work or provide the journal’s editors with evidence of its accuracy.
  • PUBLISHER
  1. Managing editors’ unethical behavior
  1. In cases of suspected or proven scientific misconduct, fraudulent publication, or plagiarism, the editor, in close collaboration with the reviewers, will take all appropriate steps to clarify the situation and amend the article in question. This includes prompt publication of an erratum, clarification or, in the worst case, withdraw of the affected work.
  2. The editor, together with the reviewers, should take the necessary measures to prevent the publication of articles in which research misconduct has occurred and should not encourage or permit such misconduct.
