Rezumat

Cartea lui Inderjeet Parmar despre cele trei mari fundații americane (Rockefeller, Carnegie, Ford) oferă o primă privire asupra unui subiect fascinant: așa-numitele fundații filantropice și nașterea industriei ONG-urilor . Fundațiile, așa cum le descrie autorul, în ciuda imparțialității, neutralității politice și dedicării lor declarate față de binele umanității, se dovedesc a fi instrumente ale schimbării politice și sociale. Ele construiesc rețele, creează rețele de oameni de știință, lideri din mediul de afaceri și mass-media, creează instituții care, pe termen lung, nu ating obiectivele declarate în mod explicit – îmbunătățirea condițiilor de viață ale maselor largi, ci servesc propriilor interese; însă, prin intermediul acestui proces, actori care-l desfășoară reușesc să sece multe țări de resursele lor intelectuale. Ele sunt un instrument de schimbare a regimului, producând adesea o diviziune între intelectuali și oamenii cărora le aparțin, atât în țara lor, cât și în străinătate. Ele sunt și contribuie la construirea unor state puternice, centralizate, diminuând libertatea. Ele sunt un instrument al tiraniei și al intervenției străine.
